Patience is a virtue they say and that is what was needed this morning when Belfast Lough was like a mirror and the Bangor Regatta fleet was motionless in the Marina. However word was that this forced stoppage was very much welcomed by some as after two days of hard racing and some revelling there were many tired bodies.
Never mind what's going on elsewhere In Ireland this weekend; with Shania Twain in Belfast's Ormeau Park, Taylor Swift at the Aviva, the All-Ireland Quarter GAA Finals in Croke Park and the Foyle Maritime Festival in Derry, there was plenty of action in Belfast Lough with the second day of Bangor Regatta drawing the full 40 strong fleet racing in rather more encouraging conditions than yesterday.
The same strong winds that brought home many of the SSE Renewables Round Ireland fleet at pace down the Irish Sea to Wicklow arrived on time for the first day of the Bangor Regatta.

ONE of the province’s biggest sailing events, Bangor Regatta, returns to the North Down coast in June.
Over 60 yachts are expected to take part in the event from across Belfast Lough, Scotland, Strangford Lough, the Isle of Man and Dublin Bay.
The Regatta team are delighted to hear of several new boats that will be sailing in Belfast Lough this year for Bangor Regatta ’24.

Royal Ulster Yacht Club has launched Bangor Regatta 2024 with the publication of the Notice of Race and Entry Form for the event, which will be run in Belfast Lough out of Bangor from 27th till 30th June.

The crews of Royal Ulster Yacht Club's marklaying and safety boat teams will be working through the cold months of winter to update and modernise their marklaying RIBs in preparation for BR24.

Royal Ulster Yacht Club's Autumn Series is well and truly underway. The event which, this year, runs from Sunday 17th September 2023 through to Sunday 29th October 2023 had twelve yachts cross the most recent start line.
The southerly wind today (Sunday), Day 4 of Royal Ulster’s Bangor Town Regatta wasn’t quite as enthusiastic as it was yesterday when racing was cancelled, so Principal Race Officer Con Murphy got the fleet away in 25 knots gusting 30, for what turned out to be the final race of the series.
Day 3 of Bangor Town Regatta turned out to be one of those High Stool Days WM Nixon wrote about in Afloat’s Sailing on Saturdays.

What a difference a day makes! There’s a eucalyptus tree near my house and if it’s all moving there’s a good chance the fleet is thrashing about Belfast Lough half a mile away. It was pretty active today.

A ‘Town’ Regatta at Bangor was first held on Belfast Lough over a century ago and saw reincarnation in 2018. Subsequent regattas fell foul of Covid 19 but on 23rd June it was all systems go for the 49 boats entered in this ‘new look’ four-day event.
