In like a lion and out like a lamb is said to mean that the month of March should end with quiet weather compared to a lion. But this is June, and the Belfast Lough weather hasn't reached the lamb stage yet. With not much more than 15 knots of a breeze from the North at times, light weather aficionados would have liked today's racing in the final rounds of Bangor Regatta 2024, though flukey and with severe wind shifts.

Never mind what's going on elsewhere In Ireland this weekend; with Shania Twain in Belfast's Ormeau Park, Taylor Swift at the Aviva, the All-Ireland Quarter GAA Finals in Croke Park and the Foyle Maritime Festival in Derry, there was plenty of action in Belfast Lough with the second day of Bangor Regatta drawing the full 40 strong fleet racing in rather more encouraging conditions than yesterday.

ONE of the province’s biggest sailing events, Bangor Regatta, returns to the North Down coast in June.

Over 60 yachts are expected to take part in the event from across Belfast Lough, Scotland, Strangford Lough, the Isle of Man and Dublin Bay.

The crews of Royal Ulster Yacht Club's marklaying and safety boat teams will be working through the cold months of winter to update and modernise their marklaying RIBs in preparation for BR24. 

Royal Ulster Yacht Club's Autumn Series is well and truly underway. The event which, this year, runs from Sunday 17th September 2023 through to Sunday 29th October 2023 had twelve yachts cross the most recent start line.

A ‘Town’ Regatta at Bangor was first held on Belfast Lough over a century ago and saw reincarnation in 2018. Subsequent regattas fell foul of Covid 19 but on 23rd June it was all systems go for the 49 boats entered in this ‘new look’ four-day event.

Bangor Town Regatta is naturally disappointed to hear of the cancellation of the Scottish Series for 2022. We know how much work the Scottish Series team will have put into organising the event and how difficult the decision will have been.
